Subject Overview:

This subject will provide students with an overview of key issues in health, both locally and internationally. Current Australian health care policies and systems will be identified. The subject will introduce students to the core roles for social workers in the interprofessional context of health care settings. This will lead to an investigation of key practice issues and theoretical considerations for social work practitioners. Throughout the subject, the concept of health will be critically examined using socio-cultural and lifecourse approaches.

Learning Outcomes:

Students who complete this subject should:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the social work role in the health field in Australia;
  • Be able to critically review social, cultural, organisational and ethical contexts of health practice;
  • Demonstrate a beginning knowledge of key social work skills for health practice.
Assessment:
  1. Class presentation (group), mid semester, 10%
  2. Written summary of presentation, 500 words, mid semester, 15%
  3. Written essay, 3500 words, end of semester, 75%
