Subject Overview:

This unit explores the principles underpinning professional practice in speech pathology. This subject will introduce students to key professional issues that have the potential to impact ethical and professional practice within private, public and research settings. Broad ethical principles will be addressed and will be considered in relation to ethical professional practice, marketing, privacy principles and the communication of speech pathology services to consumers. This subject will equip students with practical examples using case studies. It will address issues affecting issues of speech pathology practice including current funding sources, private health insurance, the role of the professional national association (Speech Pathology Australia-SPA), and practice management issues.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this subject students should demonstrate an understanding of:

  • the range and type of public and private speech pathology services available for infant, paediatric and adult caseloads
  • how to create and maintain a professional, efficient and ethically-aware speech pathology service

Assessment:
  • Completion of a 10-min oral presentation (1000 words) regarding their observation placement, submitted and presented to the group during Week 6-8, Semester 2 – 40%
  • Completion of a written essay (500 words - table or point form permitted) outlining the public and private speech pathology service delivery options for a child/adult case study, submitted in Week 9, Semester 2 – 20%
  • Completion of a written essay (1000 word) outlining the challenges to ethical practice submitted in Week 12, Semester 2 - 40%
