Subject Overview:

This subject provides students with a critical survey of the art of the mid to late twentieth century. The course addresses the shift from modernism to postmodernism in both artistic practice and theory, and it addresses the shift from internationalism to globalism. The course also deals with the concept of the avant-garde, its legacy and its critique within the expansion of popular culture and mass media throughout this period.

Learning Outcomes:

Throughout this semester students should learn to recognize and be able to critically interpret works of art characteristic of the period of the last half of the twentieth century. They will communicate their interpretation through verbal presentations in class and through written assignment.

Assessment:
  • Tutorial presentation with 1000 word written submission due one week after the presentation (40%).
  • 1500 word essay due during the assessment period (60%).
  • Hurdle requirement: 80% attendance at both lectures and tutorials is required to pass this subject.
