Subject Overview:


This subject introduces specialist knowledge of traditional Chinese culture in the domains of literature, the performing arts, the visual arts, society, history, the art of living, and beliefs and shows how teaching these enriches and supports learning of the language, itself a carrier and creator of cultural shaping. How these same aspects have been transformed in modern society is also discussed, and the teaching and learning of the whole design for living of modern China and its language are worked on methodically.

Learning Outcomes:

Students in this subject will develop their ability to

  • conceptualise with some complexity the notion of culture in relation to traditional and modern China
  • understand how the study of culture illuminates and supports the meaning of language in use
  • identify and prepare cultural resources for use in language teaching, and analyse the cultural shaping embedded in language they want to introduce
  • work collaboratively within and across cultures in professionalactivities.
Assessment:

Weekly participation in Discussion Forum activities, totalling approximately 1000 words, or equivalent40%

Assignments comprising weekly tasks involving choice of texts, text analysis, research information on authors and content, and creative practice design, totalling approximately 1500 words, or equivalent.60%
