Time Commitment: Contact Hours: 36 hours (24 hours face to face contact plus 12 hours forum participation).
Total Time Commitment:

Total time commitment of approximately 240 hours. Attendance at all classes (tutorial/seminars/practical classes/lectures/labs/online classes) is obligatory. Failure to attend 80% of classes will normally result in failure in the subject.

Subject Overview:

A study of the development, implementation and evaluation of the second language curriculum. Topics include the origins of second language curriculum development, syllabus design and curriculum development, needs analysis, situation analysis, planning goals and learning outcomes, course planning and syllabus design, the role and design of instructional materials, student assessment and program evaluation.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this subject, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a sound understanding of the second language curriculum
  • Identify, describe and critically evaluate different approaches to a key aspect of second language curriculum development
  • Design a second language curriculum framework for a specific audience and context
Assessment:

There are three items of assessment:

  • Online forum contributions during the semester (2000 words, 20%)
  • A written assignment requiring critical analysis of a key issue in second language curriculum development, due mid way through the semester(3000 words, 30%)
  • Design of an assessment framework for a specific second language curriculu, due at the end of the semester (5000 words, 50%)
