Subject Overview:

This subject involves a study of the theoretical underpinnings of modern finance. Topics covered include choice under uncertainty, portfolio theory, asset pricing models, option pricing models, investment evaluation, corporate financial policy, agency theory.

Objectives: On successful completion of this subject students should be able to:
  • Generate portfolios that are mean-variance efficient;
  • Recognise arbitrage opportunities in bond markets;
  • Apply no-arbitrage conditions to price options;
  • Discuss the factors that are important in a firms choice of capital structure;
  • Analyse the factors that are important in a firms choice of dividend policy;
  • Explain how a firm can engage in risk management.
Assessment:
  • 1.5-hour mid semester examination (30%)
  • 3-hour end-of-semester examination (50%)
  • Assignments totalling not more than 2000 words (20%)
