Subject Overview:

This is a public health and clinical subject for health professionals working or hoping to work in the area of sexual and reproductive health. It covers the following topics :sexually transmissible infections (prevention and screening, diagnosis and treatment), contraceptive choices for women during their reproductive life and the theory and rationale behind the provision and performance of Pap smears. Nurses who complete this subject will gain the theoretical knowledge necessary to undertake the clinical component for Pap smear provider accreditation. This subject is focussed on the clinical and practical aspects of sexual and reproductive health.

Objectives:

On completing this subject students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the main clinical issues relevant to health professionals in providing sexual and reproductive health services.

Assessment:
  • 4 short answer questions 2000 words total (500 words each) (20%) due 4 weeks after theoretical classroom teaching
  • 1 page policy development document due 2 weeks after theoretical classroom teaching (10%)
  • 2 essays totalling 3000 words OR 1 essay of 1500 words plus clinic visit and written task (1500 words) discussing public health approach of clinical services for sexually transmissible infections (70%) due at the end of semester
