Students who are enrolled in the two year 200 point Master of Information Systems must have completed 50 points of study to enrol in this subject.

Subject Overview:

As with many other forms of technology, information technologies have lifecycles ranging from initial conception, possible adoption and widespread use in industry, to eventual obsolescence.

This subject will examine emerging information technologies and the issues that relate to them, including: how they evolve and, enter usage, and their likely future effects on people and social structures.

This subject supports course-level objectives by allowing students to develop analytical skills to understand the complexity of real world IT usage. It promotes innovative thinking around the deployment of existing and emerging information technologies. The subject contributes to the development of independent critical inquiry, analysis and reflection.

Objectives:

Upon completion of this subject, students should be able to:

  • Understand key enabling technologies and describe how to promote technology-enabled business endeavors and initiatives
  • Describe ways of leveraging the technology to improve intra and inter-organizational processes and enhance a firm's competitive position
  • Describe how to take advantage of opportunities through emerging technologies, and explain the factors that influence how relevant an emerging technology will be in the long run
Assessment:
  • A group case (2 members) study of 3000 words, due early in the semester (20%) supporting ILO 1 and 2
  • A group case study (3 members) of 5000 words, due mid-semester (30%) supporting ILO 2 and 3
  • 2 hour examination held in the examination period (50%) supporting ILO 1 2 and 3


To pass the subject, students must obtain at least 50% overall, at least 50% for the group project, and at least 50% for the end-of-semester written examination
