This course offers a research-oriented approach to current issues – both industrial and aesthetic – in Spanish-language Film Studies. The course provides students with a detailed knowledge of the major national cinemas of Spain and Latin America. Students will be expected to focus on at least one of these cinemas and to carry out an in-depth personal study of current issues relevant to that context. In addition, students can expect to further develop their Spanish academic writing skills.

• To identify and contextualise canonical contemporary film directors from Spain, Mexico and Argentina;
• To develop research skills in the area of Film Studies
• To critically analyse specific contributions to national, transnational and global cultural/film debates.

• A written assignment of 1750 words in week 7 [40%]
• Oral presentation of 1500 words in week 10 [20%]
• An essay of 1750 words in week 12 [40%]

This subject has the following hurdle requirements:

• Regular participation in tutorials is required with a minimum of 75% attendance.
• All pieces of written work must be submitted to pass this subject.

Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at 10% per day and in-class tasks missed without approval will not be marked.

• Obtain an understanding of social, political, historical and cultural contexts and international awareness/openness to the contemporary and historical Hispanic world through the contextualisation of judgements and knowledge, developing a critical self-awareness, being open to new ideas and new aspects of Spanish culture and literature, and by formulating own arguments.
• Communicate knowledge intelligibly and economically through written essay and writing assignments, tutorial discussion and class presentations.
• Gain skills in public speaking and confidence in self-expression through tutorial participation and class presentations.
