Subject Overview:

To develop a question in Epidemiology which can be answered through the scientific method and to attempt to answer the question whether by a critical review of the published and unpublished literature, by a meta-analysis of the published and unpublished literature, or by the analysis of an existing data set, or by the development of a protocol.

Objectives:

Following the completion of this subject, students will have developed a range of skills and a sound understanding of research methods that will enable them to: critically appraise the research literature relevant to their proposal; formulate a research question; provide a rationale for the choice of research question, the research design and analytic methods; summarise, analyse and interpret research findings; present their research as formal oral presentations; and write up their research as a research report &/or as a journal manuscript.

Assessment:

A 15-minute verbal presentation (10%); a final 15-minute presentation (20%); a written submission, suitable for publication of between 5,000-8.000 words (70%). Students must pass the written research report assessment and must receive a combined score for the research report and the presentations of at least 50% in order to pass this subject.
