Subject Overview:

A study of Asian cultural sector today, focussing on visual arts, museums and the performing arts. It is aimed at current and future arts managers, curators and practitioners engaged in working between Australia and Asian countries. The course introduces issues of "difference" in Asia, between the regions of Asia and issues relating to arts institutions in Asia. There is a focus on the different social, political and cultural backgrounds of North Asia, Southeast Asia and South Asia - and how this affects practice in each place and ramifications for engagement with cross-border colleagues - as well as on arts institutional histories and missions, and, further, their legal, financial, and communication realities. The approach to the material is topic based, with general sessions being followed by more specialised sessions focussing on the visual arts and the performing arts.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students are expected to:

  • Have an understanding of the complexity of the region as a whole and how cultural, social and economic perspective inform arts practice and its delivery;
  • Have a detailed understanding of the nature of contemporary artistic production and organisation in selected countries; and
  • Feel confident to initiate projects in the region.
Assessment:

Seminar preparation and participation with a paper equivalent to 2000 words 40% (due during semester), and a 3000 word paper 60% (due at the end of semester). Students are required to attend a minimum of 80% of classes in order to qualify to have their written work assessed. All required written work must be submitted in order to pass the subject.
