Subject Overview: Whilst attending lectures in Research Methods students will also select a research topic from a list provided by the subject co-ordinator(s). The student will be introduced to ethical considerations, how to complete a literature review and scientific writing styles. Methods for the analysis and appraisal of other published work will be introduced, in addition to introducing scientific Levels of Evidence. Students will learn how to complete application forms for ethical approval and how to summarise their aims, hypotheses and methods. All students are required to produce a manuscript in the form of a scientific paper suitable for submission to an international peer-reviewed publication to be submitted in Year 2, Semester 2.
Objectives: On completion of this subject students will:
  • Apply knowledge from Research Methods (Y2,Semester 1) to independently analyse data relevant to their own Independent Studies in Speech Pathology, Minor Thesis.
  • Demonstrate the skills to prepare a scientific manuscript suitable for publication
Assessment: Students are required to submit a 2-page summary of aims, hypotheses and methods to the research supervisor mid-Semester 1. Students will plan and commence their literature review and data collection during Semester 1. A first draft of the Literature Review is submitted to the research supervisor in Week 12, Semester 1. The student must produce a manuscript in the form of a scientific paper (8000 words, plus/minus 1000 words). (Word counts do not include the Reference List and Appendix and failure to comply with these limits will result in marking penalties at 10 marks per 1000 words). A well known international journal such as JSLHR or Ear & Hearing should be used as a style guide. Each manuscript will be assessed by a nonsupervising academic staff member. The due date for the thesis is 4.00 pm, Friday, final week of September, in Year 2, Semester 2.
