Course Overview:

This course is being taught out, it is only available to currently enrolled BSW students.

The BSW degree prepares students for professional social work practice. Graduates are eligible for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers. The BSW degree course is normally taken over three years full-time, or in an accelerated programme over two overloaded years. Part-time study (over four years) is available to a limited number of students. In addition, a combined BA/BSW is available.

Objectives:

Our graduates will be able to work with individuals, couples, groups and communities, and in particular in partnership with those who are socially, economically, politically, structurally and interpersonally disadvantaged. We expect our graduates to be able to suitably use the multiple methods that characterise our profession, including direct practice with individuals and families, work with groups and communities, social policy reform and development, program development, social work research, advocacy and social action. Our graduates will demonstrate their understanding and abilities in challenging, professionally supervised and diverse social work practice settings.

The BSW course at the University of Melbourne prepares qualified social workers by providing a teaching and learning environment which develops knowledge, values, commitment and skills in working with people in need. Our graduates will be committed to the highest ideals and expectations of informed, skilled, caring and compassionate practitioners. They will work towards securing a more just, fair and equitable society in which social inequalities, discrimination and disadvantage are eliminated and people's power, abilities and potentials are enhanced. They will demonstrate ethical principles consistent with the standards of the AASW.

The School aims to produce graduates who are skilled and ready to work across the range of social work practice settings and are able to use the full range of beginning methods of the profession.
