Year and Campus: 2011
Overview: The DL provides students with the opportunity to gain a Diploma in French language while completing an undergraduate degree at the University of Melbourne. The Diploma consists of a three-year sequence of first-, second- and third-year language study and may add up to one year to the duration of the student’s degree course.
Objectives: On completion of the Diploma, students should:
  • have acquired a mastery of both oral/aural and writing/reading skills comparable to that of a student majoring in a language discipline;
  • have gained a basic understanding of selected aspects of the culture (or cultures) and of the society (or societies) associated with the language.
Structure & Available Subjects:

The Diploma consists of a three-year sequence of first-, second- and third-year language study and may add up to one year to the duration of the student’s degree course. See the Diploma course structure for details.

Students completing the DL in French should undertake French Intermediate Language and Culture A and B OR Intensive Intermediate French (25 points) and French Intermediate Cultural Studies

Beginners stream third year students should undertake the following subjects plus one Level 3 elective.

Intermediate Stream: Level 1

Intermediate level study is appropriate for students who have completed four or five years of high school level French, or who have obtained a VCE score of 32 or below.

Students can substitute French Intermediate Cultural Studies with a Level 2 elective.

Advanced level study is suitable for students who have obtained a VCE score of 33 or above in Year 12 French, or its equivalent.
