Subject Overview:

This subject provides a broad perspective on the interpretation and analysis of financial reports and accounting information. Principal topics will include:

  • Accounting reports and analysis
  • Interpreting financial statements
  • Financial statement ratios
  • Accounting reports and business failures
  • The limitations of accounting information.

Objectives:

A student who has successfully completed this subject should have:

  • A knowledge of accounting concepts relating to the preparation of the Balance Sheet, Income Statement and Cash Flow Statement
  • The ability to effectively interpret financial reports and supporting notes
  • The ability to calculate and interpret financial reporting ratios
  • The ability to understand accounting issues in commercial transactions
  • An awareness of the limitations of financial reports.

Assessment:

Take-home examination (100%) (12-15 November)
or
10,000 word research paper (100%) (15 November) on a topic approved by the subject coordinator
