Subject Overview:

First semester comprises formal drawing classes based mainly on observational drawing; figure drawing, still life and other modes of observational drawing. Group tutorials to discuss and critique students' work, and drawing related issues of historical and contemporary relevance are held on a regular basis. Students are required to maintain sketchbooks and diaries.

Objectives:
  • display a visual understanding of basic forms and the human form via observational drawing
  • be conversant with the use of, and successfully employ, a variety of drawing media and materials
  • be capable of executing a range of drawing responses from the notational 'first thoughts' sketch to sustained drawings
  • show evidence of individual research in drawing as an independent activity and as it relates to the printmaking major
  • display skill development

Assessment:

Assessment is based on a folio of the student's work, submitted at the end of the semester, containing a requisite number of works completed during the semester including finished works, developmental studies, set assignments, sketches, sketchbooks, diaries and any other relevant material the student may decide to submit (100 %).
