Subject Overview:

This subject is for students enrolled in the Master of Dental Science by research who wish to conduct their research project in the fields of oral pathology and oral medicine. It does not include clinical training.

The Didactic Component

The course consists of a combination of any or all of the following components: tutorials, laboratory work, paraclinical and clinical assignments, written assignments and a research project. Candidates may be required to assist in undergraduate teaching, but this will be limited to one session per week over the teaching semesters.

The Clinical Aspect

This course is essentially research-orientated, but candidates may be able to carry out some clinical work related to their research activities.

The Research Project

Candidates will spend the majority of their time undertaking the research project.

Assessment: Assessment will be by presentation of a major thesis of approximately 40,000 words detailing the results of research activities carried out during the course. (The examiners reserve the right in some circumstances to require the candidate to submit a written and/or oral examination relating to the subject of the thesis.) The thesis must be satisfactorily completed by the candidate and passed by the examiners. It is expected that the thesis will include one or more papers published or in preparation for publication. Pass requirements for each subject are as described above.
