Subject Overview:

This subject was formerly called Analytical Methods for Urban Planning.

The purpose of this subject is to provide students with knowledge of primary and secondary data collection methods, techniques and skills, commonly used by urban planners. The subject develops understanding and skill in the collection, analysis and representation of information. It outlines and applies elements of quantitative data collection, tabulation and interpretation, along with qualitative approaches including observation, focus groups and interviews. The focus of assessment is upon tasks that develop and enhance the students' skill in the use of these techniques and their application to urban planning problems and research tasks. The skills developed will be applied in subsequent core and elective subjects in the Master of Urban Planning Degree.
Objectives:
  • Knowledge of techniques and skills involved in primary and secondary data collection, analysis and presentation.
  • Ability to analyse urban planning problems and shape a research agenda to address the issues identified;
  • Ability to write and make oral presentations on urban planning research.
Assessment:
  • Critical analysis of primary data collection methods, 2,000 words (40%, due week 6).
  • Indicators blog, 500 words (10%, due week 8).
  • Community profile, 2,000 words (40%, due week 12).
  • Presentation of Community Profile (10%, equivalent of 500 words, due week 12).
