Subject Overview:

In 2010 this travelling studio will be held in Mexico.

This travelling studio will address 2 key areas of concern to the world today: the need for new affordable housing, and the need to dispose of the waste generated by today's consumer culture. Working in tandem with academic staff and students from ITESM Monterrey, students will be required to design shelters and building elements from refuse. ITESM already has a well-developed program which involves architecture students designing local cost dwellings outside of Monterrey. This subject will allow Melbourne School of Design students to imagine and investigate how waste materials can be used for low-cost housing in the developing world.

Objectives:
  • An invesitgation which develops benchmark measures of recycling in urban environments with high population densities.
  • A comparative investigation of low-cost affordable housing issues between Monterrey and Melbourne.
Assessment:
  • Class participation 10%.
  • Seminar presentation equivalent to 3000 words 30%.
  • Design proposals, projects and workshop exercises equivalent to at least 7000 words 60%.
Assessment and submissions will be made progressively after return from the field trip.
