This subject has the following teaching availabilities in 2010:

10 hours per week, 5 hours lectures/tutorials, 5 hours self directed learning

90% attendance

This subject will focus on the development of skills and attitudes which will foster the student’s professional role on returning to their country of origin. This subject is intended to build the student’s capacity to apply professional knowledge and behaviours such as teaching skills, self reflection and self assessment and economic factors into consideration into their furture work. It is also intended for the student to develop insights into their own leadership potential and how they might plan a useful and rewarding career path. The student will negotiate their learning program with the co-ordinator and the focus of the tutorials undertaken will reflect the individual students’ needs, for example some short courses will be offered where appropriate.

a) Knowledge:

The student will focus on integrating quality clinical practice, public health, research and teaching skills. Students will focus on how their studies can be used to build capacity in the student's country of origin.

b) Generic skills:

Professional knowledge and behaviours-

• Demonstrate honesty, integrity and reliability in dealing with patients, families and colleagues.

• Allocate time for self-reflection and self-assessment and continuing medical education including a willingness to contribute to the education of others.

• Develop the ability to question and be questioned.

• Make a commitment to critical appraisal, peer review and quality assurance.

• Take responsibility for their actions in human and economic terms, so as to achieve the desired clinical outcome for the patient with the lowest cost to the community.

Teaching skills-

• Demonstrate competence in small group teaching eg Problem based learning tutorials, bedside teaching and small group clinical tutorials

• Demonstrate competence in oral presentation skills

Oral presentation to Postgraduate Committee (100%, 20mins duration). The student will be asked to do 15 minute oral presentation that will relate to how the student intends/plans to apply skills, knowledge, mentorship, networks established through the MMed course to provide leadership, capacity building, research and/or or quality clinical care in their own country of origin in the future.

Pass/fail hurdle for 90% attendance of teaching program.

This subject is not available as a breadth subject.
