Subject Overview:

Areas covered include Spanish phonetics, pronunciation, basic grammar (including the conjugation of verbs in the present, present perfect and past tenses), dictionary usage for literal translation of texts being prepared for recital, and language coaching in these songs.

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to

  • perform confidently in a language other than English, especially in public
  • understand aspects of a diverse culture through its language and song
  • understand the processes involved in the preparation of song material in a European language other than English
  • apply their knowledge to prepare any song repertoire in Spanish
  • transpose knowledge of Spanish to enhance their understanding of English and other European languages
  • utilise cognates as a means of expanding vocabulary across a wide range of European languages.
Assessment:

Performance of at least two selected songs by the end of semester (50%); preparation of both literal and polished translations of assigned texts due during the semester (30%); active class participation including completion of oral and written exercises (20%)
