Subject Overview: Students enrolled in this subject will be assisted to find a placement in a professional working environment. They will work for approximately 100 hours under the guidance of a senior staff person, with additional support from the subject co-ordinator and regular workshop sessions. As well as taking part in the host organisation's day-to-day work, students will undertake a research project of concrete and practical benefit to the host organisation or the broader industry. The research topic will be negotiated between the student, the organisation's management and the subject co-ordinator. Students will develop skills in conducting effective and timely research, analysis and report-writing, and will also gain direct exposure to professional practice.
Objectives:

Students completing this subject will:

  • have acquired an extensive knowledge of the conditions, cultures and practices of a range of workplaces;
  • have gained practical vocational experience in an industry setting;
  • have developed a capacity to critically evaluate their experience and to share their findings through written and oral reports; and
  • have an extended ability to apply professional concepts, frameworks and techniques in a practical setting.
Assessment: Description of company, CV, cover letter and career plan equivalent to 1500 words 15% (due early in the semester), project proposal of 1000 words 10% (due mid-late semester), journal and professional portfolio of 3500 words 35% and research report of 4000 words 40% (due end of semester).

Students successfully completing this subject will have:

  • skills in time management and planning through managing workloads for recommended reading, and workshop presentations; and
