Overview:

French

The French studies program combines language learning and cultural awareness in a comprehensive range of subjects. It accommodates entry at all language levels, from beginners to advanced. Cultural subjects include courses on food and wine, cinema, theatre, immigration and identity, and several literary options. As one of the major languages and cultural influences in the European Union and the United Nations, French provides access to a whole network of international communications. French is the language of many countries and cultures, and through French Studies at the University of Melbourne, a vast body of literary, historical and scientific knowledge will be opened to students.

Structure & Available Subjects: French

A 100 point major and 75 point minor sequence is available in French across three language streams:

  • Beginners: for students who have very little or no knowledge of French.
  • Intermediate: for students who have undertaken four or five years of secondary school French or equivalent.
  • Advanced/Post-VCE: for students who have obtained a ENTER score of 33 or above in VCE French, or its equivalent.

The major usually consists of 25 points at level one, 37.5 points at level two and 37.5 at level three. The minor usually consists of 25 points at level one, 25 points at level two and 25 points at level three.

Beginners Stream - Level 1

Students completing the French major or minor are required to complete the following level 1 subjects (25 points).

Beginners Stream - Level 2

Students completing the French major are required to complete French Intermediate Language and Culture A and B OR Intensive Intermediate French and French Intermediate Cultural Studies (37.5 points). Students completing the French minor are only required to complete French Intermediate Language and Culture A and B OR Intensive Intermediate French (25 points).

Beginners Stream - Level 3

Students completing the French major or minor are required to complete the following Level 3 subjects (25 points). Students completing the major are required to complete an additional Level 3 elective subject (12.5 points).

Students completing French major or minor are required to complete the following Level 1 subjects (25 points).

Intermediate stream - Level 2

Students completing the French major are required to complete the following Level 2 subjects (37.5 points). French Intermediate Cultural Studies can be substituted with a Level 2 elective. Students completing the French minor are only required to complete French Language and Culture 2A and 2B (25 points).

Students completing the major are also required to complete two Level 3 elective subjects (25 points).
