Subject Overview:

The subject introduces students in the Faculty of Architecture, Building & Planning to the skills necessary to conduct rigorous and original research and effectively communicate their research findings in a clear and systematic manner. The subject concentrates on the preliminary stages of thesis writing:

  • selecting and refining a research topic
  • developing appropriate research questions/hypotheses
  • selecting and using appropriate research methods
Objectives:
  • Design an appropriate research program for their research Project
  • Propose a research topic and survey the relevant literature
  • Demonstrate an understanding of various research approaches and paradigms and methods of data collection and analysis
Assessment: This subject is marked on a Pass/Fail only basis.

Submission of research proposal (5,000 words) 80% - due last week of semester.

Oral presentation based upon research proposals 20% - due last week of semester.

A pass must be attained in both the research proposal and the oral presentation in order to pass the subject overall.
