Subject Overview:

This subject introduces the fundamental processes of identifying requirements for specifying and designing information systems. Students will gain experience in the tools and techniques for all stages of the analysis and design cycle. Topics may include analysis techniques, data modeling, feasibility assessment, process modelling, automated support tools including computer aided software engineering (CASE), database design and specification, prototyping, and systems development methodologies.

Objectives:

At the completion of this subject, students should:

  • understand structured and object-oriented software development;

  • be able to apply appropriate techniques to different stages of software life cycle;

  • have hands-on experience with software development tools for systems analysis and design; and

  • be able to participate in team projects involving analysis and design of medium-scale information systems.

Assessment:

Group project work due during the semester (50%); a 3-hour written examination in the examination period (50%). Satisfactory completion of both project work and the examination is necessary to pass the subject.
