Subject Overview:

This subject develops teacher candidates’ understanding of the place of this learning area in contemporary goals of school in Australia and in the Victorian curriculum in particular. By considering the principles of learning and teaching that underpin effective classrooms and the research that supports these principles, this subject will widen teacher candidates’ appreciation of exemplary teaching in this area.

Topics include: planning and organisation; teaching and learning, assessment and resources for learning. Commerce, economics, civics and citizenship and business related units at 7-10 levels within the framework of the Victorian Essential Learning Standards are explored. The subject will consider the teaching of specialist business studies VCE areas: accounting, business management, economics and legal studies, including unit planning and assessment.
Objectives:

On completion of this subject teacher candidates will be able to:

  • Appreciate the place of this learning area in Australian curriculum
  • Describe an exemplary classroom in this learning area
  • Demonstrate competency in the use of concepts, knowledge and skills in Business Studies and develop coherent learning sequences in accordance with current curriculum frameworks
  • Foster developmentally appropriate and socially just curriculum and model learning strategies which develop inquiry and curiosity about the world
  • Develop an understanding of what is best practice in the teaching and learning of Business Studies
  • Demonstrate professional collegiality and participate effectively in team work
  • Reflect on their practice
  • Identify areas for personal ongoing professional learning
Assessment:

There are 3 assessment tasks:

  • Annotated lesson plans (800 words) due early semester (20%)
  • Resource Evaluation (1600 words equivalent) due late semester (40%)
  • Presentation (1600 words equivalent) as scheduled (40%)
