Time Commitment: Contact Hours: Four hours of language classes per week
Total Time Commitment: 4 contact hours/week , 8 additional hours/week. Total of 12 hours per week.
Prerequisites: Chinese 4B or equivalent as determined by the coordinaor. New students may not enrol unless they have attended an interview and/or placement test in the week preceding the first week of semester, and the written permission of the coordinator.

Subject Overview: This is a subject for students who have limited literacy in Chinese. Students will build on their previous study and be able to read relatively complex texts as well as increasing their knowledge of traditional Chinese culture. They should be able to conduct discussion on a wide range of topics.
Objectives:
  • read a variety of extracts from modern literature;
  • be familiar with traditional Chinese culture;
  • write Standard Chinese in a variety of styles;
  • acquire skills to write effectively on complex cultural issues, drawing on knowledge drawn from written sources;
  • have knowledge of a difficult system of written communication requiring intensive time discipline and regular application of effort; and
  • acquire skills to discuss contemporary issues and their historical and cultural backgrounds orally and in writing.
Assessment: A 1-hour composition test 20% (mid-semester), a 10-minute oral examination 10% (during the examination period), a 2-hour examination 60% (during the examination period), ongoing class work 5% and ongoing class participation 5%.

Notes: This subject is available is for background speakers stream of Chinese (limited literacy). This subject was previously offered as 110-041 Standard Chinese 3A. Students who have completed Standard Chinese 3A are not eligible to enrol in this subject.
