Time Commitment: Contact Hours: 2.5 hours of seminars/workshops per week
Total Time Commitment: 2.5 contact hours/week , 6 additional hours/week. Total of 8.5 hours per week.
Prerequisites: Usually 12.5 points of first year creative writing and 25 points of second year creative writing.

Subject Overview: Students in this subject will inquire into a wide range of traditional and contemporary stylistic practices in poetry and poetics. Students will analyse and present discussions on a variety of poetic texts and recent works on poetics, before applying central poetic styles in their own writing. The subject will also involve intensive workshopping of students' own poetry with a specific focus on extending poetic technique and developing and articulating a personal poetic.
Objectives:
  • relate their creative work to historical developments in the writing and production of poetry;
  • devise, draft and develop a writing project with an introduction relating their work to theoretical and historical reading;
  • demonstrate a wide and close reading of a variety of poetic texts with an emphasis on contemporary poetry;
  • relate their creative work to issues raised in linguistic, critical, poetic and theoretical texts of commentary.
Assessment: Poetry equivalent to 3000 words 80% (half due mid-semester, remainder due end of semester), personal poetics paper 1000 words 10% (due end of semester) and a 30-minute class presentation (as scheduled during the semester) and participation in workshops/ exercises 10%. A hurdle requirement of attendance at 80% of seminars/workshops is required in order to submit assessment for this subject and be eligible for a passing grade.

Notes: Students who have completed 760-330 are not eligible to enrol in this subject. This subject is available to Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Creative Arts students and may be credited towards a major in Creative Writing in either course.
