Course Overview:

The postgraduate diploma allows students to undertake a research project in a specialist field of study. Students will gain considerable knowledge in an area of Media and Communications and engage in critical assessment of major debates and professional practices. The course provides a pathway to higher degree research for students who have not completed a four year BA (Honours) with a research component in Media and Communications.

Objectives:

Students who complete the postgraduate diploma should be able to:

  • complete the equivalent of fourth year honours with a research component and obtain a recognised qualification.
  • demonstrate understanding of the changing nature of media industries and professional practices in the contemporary world and how these inform and influence diverse social, cultural and political processes.
  • demonstrate understanding of major theoretical and methodological approaches deployed in the media and communications subject and research field.
  • demonstrate skills in conducting a sustained advanced research project in a specialised aspect of media and communications and bringing this to successful completion and in conformity to protocols of academic presentation.

Entry Requirements: The Minimum Entry Requirements
  • an undergraduate degree with a major, or equivalent, in media and communication or journalism with a GPA of at least H2B (70%)
or
  • an undergraduate degree relevant to media and communications with a GPA of at least H2B (70%) and at least one year of documented relevant professional or work experience

or

  • a Postgraduate Certificate in Arts (Media & Communications) with a GPA of at least H2B (70%) or equivalent.

The Selection Committee may conduct interviews and tests and call for referee reports and employer references to elucidate any of the matters referred to above.
