Time Commitment: Contact Hours: 34 hours in total. Consisting of two 1 hour lectures per week and a 1 hour tutorial. There will be no tutorials in the first and last week of semester.

Subject Overview:

This subject is a detailed examination of the major elements of English grammar using principles of linguistic analysis. Students learn to identify and describe the main morphological and syntactic constructions in English including parts of speech; basic sentence structure; tense, aspect, and mood; clause type; negation; complex sentences; thematic systems; the relations between sentences in discourse; and ellipsis and coordination.

Assessment: Eight sets of tutorial exercises totalling 10% (due over the course of the semester), two 1000-word assignments, 25% each (due mid-semester and at the end of semester) and a 2-hour examination 40% (during the examination period).

Breadth Options: This subject is a level 2 or level 3 subject and is not available to new generation degree students as a breadth option in 2008.
This subject or an equivalent will be available as breadth in the future.
Breadth subjects are currently being developed and these existing subject details can be used as guide to the type of options that might be available.
2009 subjects to be offered as breadth will be finalised before re-enrolment for 2009 starts in early October.
