Subject Overview:

This subject provides participants with a grounding in the technical fundamentals of IT infrastructure, as well as managerial aspects of IT Infrastructure and Service Provision. Technical fundamentals which will be covered include data, voice, image, and video in the modern digital enterprise, as well as the concepts, models, architectures, protocols, standards, and security for the design, implementation, and management of digital networks. Managerial aspects will include core and additional IT Infrastructure components, the commoditisation of IT, including the technical knowledge, skills, policies, standards, experience need to be in place for effective support of firm-wide services. Participants will become familiar with several managerial frameworks from managing firm-wide IT infrastructure, and its alignment with organisational strategy.

Upon completion of this subject, students should be able to:
1. explain the capabilities as well as the strengths and weaknesses of various computational, data, networking, and software architectures
2. describe managerial issues and technologies related to interoperability: issues and technologies
3. justify the choice between open standards and proprietary solutions
4. list and describe the product strategies of major hardware, software, and telecommunications vendors
5. explain how national and global standards organizations influence architectural standards, regulations, and future developments
6. explain the issues related to the acquisition and ongoing management of telecommunications products, services, and contracts

Assessment: Written assignments and project work totalling no more than 6000 words due during the semester (60%); a 2-hour written examination in the examination period (40%). Further details will be made available to students prior to the commencement of the subject.
