Subject Overview: This subject enables students to develop in consultation with their supervisors a research proposal specific to their thesis topic. This will include methodology and ethics approval preparation. On completion of the proposal, students are expected to defend the proposal in a specially convened seminar program.
Assessment: Research proposal - 4,000 words limit (70%), Defence of proposal (30%).

On completion of this subject students will be able to demonstrate:

  • The ability to select a thesis topic in consultation with a research supervisor
  • An ability to apply research method and design principles in developing a research protocol
  • The ability to present a research proposal to a forum consisting of members of the academic staff and peers.

On completion of this subject, students will be able to demonstrate the following generic skills:

  • Skills in written scientific communication
  • Skills in oral communication and presentation
  • A respect for truth and intellectual integrity and for the ethics of research and scholarship
  • An ability to critically analyse published research
