Subject Overview: This subject addresses theories and research into the communication, language, and literacy skills of school aged students with a language delay/disorder or hearing loss; the impact of a language disorder/delay on the development of social skills; sampling and analysis of communication, language, and literacy assessment techniques; the interpretation and reporting of results, problem solving, and program development for students with language delay/disorder or hearing loss.
Assessment: A written essay 2000 words (50%: due mid semester) and a practical assignment (50%: due end of semester)

Generic Skills:

On completion of this subject, students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of language and literacy acquisition by school-aged children with language delay/disorder or hearing loss;
  • Demonstrate an advanced understanding of issues associated with assessment of communication, language, and literacy;
  • Demonstrate an ability to analyse, problem solve and interpret results from different assessments for students with language delay/disorder or hearing loss
  • Demonstrate an ability to plan individualized communication, speech, language, and literacy programs.
  • Evaluate a child's communication, language, and literacy competence;
  • Use of a range of different assessment tools;
  • Collect and analyse communication, language and literacy samples;
  • Problem-solve communication, language and literacy issues;
  • Plan appropriate interventions for students with language delay/disorder or hearing loss.
