Subject Overview:

Topics covered include:

Recruitment strategies for infectious diseases
Natural history versus intervention studies.
Ethics of conduct of studies in the developed and developing worlds
The informed consent process in infectious diseases
The role of placebo control arms and where they are appropriate.
Issues of confidentiality, especially where specific sensitivities to specific diagnoses are concerned.
How to conduct vaccine studies including immunogenicity, efficacy and safety
Post marketing studies
Specific diseases will be used as examples. These will include, HIV, hepatitis B and C, genital herpes

Assessment:

Two assignments, each of 2,000 words, and each worth 50%.

Understand the methods employed in the conduct of infectious diseases clinical trials
Understand ethical issues specific to infectious diseases clinical trials
Understand how endpoints of infectious diseases clinical trials are determined, including surrogate markers
Define surrogate markers, and identify their limitations
Understand the microbiological and laboratory assessment of infectious disease clinical trials
Understand vaccine study design
Design a research proposal in infectious diseases
