Subject Overview:

The subject will focus on the works and lives of artists in three contrasting cities, Florence, Rome and Venice in sixteenth century Italy. The rivalries between artistic centres in Renaissance Italy will be analysed, in terms of rivalries between cities, between courts, between artists, between patrons and between the authors of theoretical treatises. Other issues to be explored will include case studies of famous artists such as Giorgione, Titian, Tintoretto, Michelangelo and Veronese.

Assessment: A seminar report of 500 words 15% (due during the semester), an essay of 1500 words 35% (due during the semester), and a take-home exam of 2000 words 50% (during the examination period).Assessment submitted late without an approved formal extension will be penalised at 2% per day. Students who fail to submit up to 2-weeks after the final due date without a formal extension and/or special consideration will receive a fail grade for the piece of assessment.
