Course Overview:

The graduate certificate provides students with a general understanding of key concepts and issues in English language. Students undertaking this short and concentrated program of study will develop valuable skills of analysis and critique. The certificate is an entry point to an articulated structure of higher degree study and may qualify graduates for entry to the professional masters by coursework.

Objectives:

Students who complete the graduate certificate should:

  • develop a general understanding of the nature of the structure, history and use of English;
  • acquire a basic conceptual framework for describing and analysing English.

Total 50 points - subjects are 12.5 points each, unless indicated otherwise.

* The ESL units are available to students of non-English speaking background only. A maximum of two ESL units may be credited towards the Graduate Certificate in Arts (English Language). Students may enrol in ESL subjects before sitting a placement test. However, final placement will depend on results of the DELA diagnostic test or an interview with ESL staff. Students who are native speakers of English, or who have a comparable level of competency, are not eligible to enrol. Students should sit the DELA which is run during the week before the start of Semester.

The minimum entry requirement is:

  • an undergraduate degree in any discipline.
